Preparing for a Senior Session

Preparing for a Senior session can be overwhelming, especially if you or your family have never done it before, or if it’s been a long time. I love photographing seniors and I do my best to help my clients plan for their sessions so they’re getting the most out of it.

First, find a photographer you love. I plan to go more in-depth and write another post about this part soon, but find someone with a style you love and a personality you vibe with. You want someone that makes you feel comfortable, someone that captures who you really are. Anyone can click a button on a camera, but it’s so much more than that! No one expects you to be a model, and it’s normal to be a little stiff at first. I, personally, try to make it fun for my clients—even if I am a little awkward at times, myself.

Second, choose an amount of time that works for you. I generally recommend at least an hour, but two hours can give you time for more outfits or locations or just to get comfortable in front of the camera. Typically, I recommend not starting with your favorite outfit, save it for the first change—you’ll be more comfortable by then and the lighting will usually be a little better, depending on start time.

Third, think about bringing uniforms and jerseys, accessories like hats, jewelry, or jackets, props like an instrument or sporting equipment (basketball, volleyball, baseball bat, etc), or even something that represents a favorite hobby. I also love having pets join in when possible! These photos are about you and who you are. Let it shine!

There are a handful of other things to keep in mind when you’re prepping for your session. Be sure to bring a hairbrush and maybe even some makeup for touchups if needed. This is Colorado and the sun can be harsh, so sunscreen is still recommended. Bring a water bottle, too! Remove any items you don’t want photographed from your wrists—bracelets, hair ties, fitness watch, etc. Also, don’t have your phone in your pocket!

If you have anything you’re nervous or self-conscious about, talk to your photographer! A quality professional will help answer all of your questions, and if you don’t get all the answers you need, either keep asking or find someone else that meets your needs better. It would be my pleasure to talk to you, as well!
